Pignics 2004 : Well, our first Pignic is over. And those that attended had a great time.

Don, Deb, Melanie, Dan D., Ken, Randy, Patty, Katie, Christina, Paul S., Jeff and Carol Hewitt and their grand daughter all showed up and had a good time at Shawnee.

We took over a couple picnic tables. Put up a banner so everyone knew who we were and proceeded to have a good time. The Ranger seen our banner at one point. Stopped and brought us over a bunch of maps.

Patty and her two daughters hit the water in kayaks and were doing pretty good. As the rest of us were getting ready, the local rangers came over to check us out. Checking for launch permits or registration we were all covered. The ranger looked at the little ones out in the kayaks and said, "Your gonna have your hands full with those two." (Actually they would do pretty good.) He looked around and asked if everyone had a PFD (life preserver) I assured him that we were a very safety orientated group and always wore PFD's. Right about then. Patty yells from out on the water to me. "Hey Randy. Guess what I forgot? My PFD." She couldn't have timed that comment any better. The ranger smiled and just turned and walked away.

Paul Susko didn't want to hit the water. Instead he took off to do some exploring on his bike. The rest of us hit the water for some paddling. Paul rode 11 miles of local trails. One trail he rode had him in about 5 inches of mud. He said his tires were almost as big as car tires and he couldn't ride anymore.

The newest paddlers, Katie age 5, and Christina age 7 did very well. The paddles were to big for them and they tired quickly though. Patty and Randy hooked tow ropes to the front of the kids boats and the back of their kayaks and the kids got a great ride as they were towed around the lake. ( yeah wish someone would tow me around the lake)

Jeff, Carol and granddaughter caught up to us in their canoe. The water was perfect for paddling and we had a blast. After cruising around the island we headed back to the docks.

As we hit the docks. We all started switching kayaks and trying each others crafts out. One little girl who had been watching was asked if she wanted to give it a try. She finally got brave enough to give it a try. And with her mothers permission, we put her in an Otter and let her go. Randy ended up going out to help explain how to use the kayak paddles. She caught on quickly and was all smiles in no time. Everyone that tried my Jolt liked it. But they all said the same thing. That they hit a finger on the one bolt. (I did the same thing when I first got it, and I was gonna move the darn thing, but I have quit hitting it so I guess you get use to it after a while.) The Zydeco had lots of people trying it too. Don said he thought Deb would really like it. I never did hear what she thought of it.

Dan and Ken had taken off when the rest of the group had started to head back and they ended up doing some exploring way around the backside and up a small feeder stream. It was Dan's first trip to Shawnee and Ken was giving him the grand tour. They were out for a real long time and when they finally got back they both said they had a blast.

Back at the tables. We all dug in and ate. Food hit the spot. I'm always amazed how good food taste when you eat it on a picnic. Just plain ole sandwiches. But wow were they good. Don and Ken had burgers going. We all ate till we were filling good.

When we finished. Patty, Randy and the kids got on the bikes and hit the trail going around the lake. We really didn't expect to finish the entire trip. But the kids did great and we did all 3.5 miles around the lake. Katie had one good wreck. Not bad considering she just got the training wheels off her bike at home.

The day finally ended and we all loaded the toys back up. It was a great day and those that showed up had a great time. Sorry more of you couldn't make it. Hope to see more of you at the next Pignic.

NEXT PIGNIC IS AT BLACK MOSHANNON STATE PARK.
JUNE 6TH. 2PM COME PARTY WITH US.

Kayaking : First Kayak Trip of 2004 May 7th, 2004

Well, the trip went off this time. And we had a blast. To think we almost canceled the trip thinking it might be to cold out. Or the water would be to cold. Or the river would be to high. Well, air wasn't to cold, the water wasn't to bad and it was running just high enough that we all had a blast.

Rob, Carol, Mark, Charlene, Tom, Patty and Randy. That was the line up for the day. Dan D. Was going to try and make it, but had to cancel at the last minute. Larry wasn't able to make it either. (Sorry you missed it guys, great trip) We unloaded the kayaks, hauled them to the water and got ready to go. Faith and Edon showed up to wish us well and see us off. Dave F. Showed up too. He had wussed out and decided not to go today. We picked on him for a while, till he finally took off. To Cold, No wetsuit, Blah, Blah, Blah. He just wussed out.

This was the first time on the water in kayaks to do a trip for Charlene, Mark and Rob. Till the trip was over. All three were hooked. The put in wasn't the best place. It had the new comers a bit nervous. But it went off without a hitch and we started on our way downstream. The river would give us short bouts of rapids with nice long sections of slow moving water. As we headed down one section rapids. Mark went wide and just missed hitting a small branch sticking out of the water. I watched as he teetered, but he stayed up. Great move Mark. Then I noticed Rob heading the same direction. But he wasn't as lucky and hit the branch. He teetered, then tottered. Then he went for a swim. He was fine and hauled his kayak to the bank to drain it out. I saw him trying to dump water and headed upstream to give him a hand. The current grabbed the front of my kayak. It bounced off a tree and I barely stayed up. I turned and looked at everyone and said "Hey, this thing has great secondary stability." (Famous Last Words) I'm still not sure what happened. Tom said the current tipped me really hard. But suddenly I was swimming with the fishes. I hauled the kayak to shore. Rob came down and helped me dump the water and we were off and running again.( Once more I have noticed, that my hat stayed on my head the entire time. I almost lost my camera, Tom saved it. But the hat stayed on. Still can't figure that one out)

Patty and Charlene headed to shore while I recovered my kayak and took a much needed pee break. Next thing we know, Patty is walking out on this downed tree sticking out over the water. She got out as far as she could and then sat down. This was almost her downfall (pun intended). But somehow she managed to get back up and back onto dry land without falling in. She even kept her shoes dry. ( Special Note To All: I recently purchased Patty two different types of water shoes for kayaking. She even bragged to Char about how great they were. "You'll see them when we go kayaking today," she told Char while they were working. Well, Patty wore her really nice pair of tennis shoes as we hit the water today. She had left both pair of water shoes sitting at home. Man am I glad I got those shoes for her.)

Then these two goofballs (Patty and Char, in this group I realized I better be specific) got into a splashing battle. Patty and Char were splashing each other up a storm. Before you knew it. They were both soaked. (Luckily Patty had on her water shoes, Oh wait a minute. DUHHHH) Staying away from these two was a smart move. Patty got my kayak pump and started using that to try and soak Char. Char was getting pretty good at using her paddle to splash Patty. Neither one would fall in during the day. But it wouldn't matter. They couldn't get much wetter than they were.

Patty got stuck in some shallow water and had to get out and push her kayak. No problem. That is what those water shoes were made for. Oh wait a minute. OH NEVER MIND ABOUT THE WATER SHOES. As Carol and I were watching this spectacle. Carol looked at me and says. "You fall in on every trip don't you?" ( Hmmmm, remind me to tip Carol over on another trip. Oh, and the answer seems to be yes, I do.)

As we pulled in to finally take out at the end of the day. Patty was chasing a ball in the river, Tom and her had found on the banks and were playing with it. Well, at least till I noticed that Patty had failed to notice that she was drifting into a rapid below the take out. She paddled hard and finally got to shore. Char was first to get out of her Kayak and step onto the shoreline. She sank up to her knees in mud. Then as we were hauling our kayaks up to the car. Patty took a heck of a tumble into a patch of stinging nettles. This was the worst part of the trip. The nettles got most of us pretty good.

We had found a nice way around the bad spot that Don and crew had found the last time they were on this section of river. We saw some ducks, a hawk, some small fishing grabbing bugs. We ran some nice rapids. Paddled some really nice easy flatwater. Charlene, Mark and Rob all had a blast. In fact everyone had a blast. Mark is asking how much a kayak cost. May be another one in the group soon. Rob broke in his new kayak. Tom and I also broke in our kayaks on running water. I really broke mine in as I filled it with water after dumping it.

BIG THANK YOU'D to Don and Deb For loaning Charlene Holzer a kayak. To Dan Brady For loaning Mark Davis a kayak. And to Mayes (a guy I work with) Who loaned me a trailer that allowed me to carry 4.5 kayaks. (Carols kayak can't count as a full boat. It's a wiener boat. Ask Rob) We were able to carry 7 kayaks at once. It worked out great.
   Randy
